Ajiry Centre: Transforming Lives Through Digital Literacy and Skills Training

Nestled in the heart of Nyahururu town, next to the Deputy County Commissioner's office, Ajiry Centre stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity for many.

According to Communication specialist Jeremy Mwangangi who is also in charge of the centre what began as a single-class training facility in March 2023 has quickly evolved into a transformative institution, empowering individuals with essential skills for the modern world.

Mwangangi points out that Ajiry Centre operates under the Department of Education, Youths, Sports, and Social Services in Laikipia County.

At its inception, the institution focused on short courses like show management and mental health.

"However, the vision soon expanded and in December 7, 2023, the centre was officially launched by Laikipia County Governor His Excellency Joshua Irungu, marking a new chapter in its educational journey," adds Mwangangi.

Recognizing the growing demand for digital proficiency, he further noted Ajiry Centre introduced computer literacy and digital literacy training in January 2024.

Additionally while partnering with Elimu Computer Centre, the institution now offers structured programs to equip trainees with essential digital skills.

"Classes are well-organized, with computer literacy sessions scheduled on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, while digital literacy takes place on Thursdays and Fridays," he adds.

However Mwangangi notes the that centre doesn't just focus on technical skills; it also emphasizes soft skills such as communication, critical thinking, and decision-making.

He further notes that in order to foster these abilities, a part-time life skills program has been introduced, ensuring that trainees are not only job-ready but also equipped with the confidence to navigate their careers successfully.

Ajiry Centre has also made significant strides in infrastructure. A fully equipped studio for podcasting and show rehearsals has been established, providing trainees with hands-on experience in media production. This development is part of a broader effort to create diverse learning opportunities within the institution.

The impact of Ajiry Centre’s work is evident in its growing student population notably last year in August 2024, nearly 1,000 students graduated from the Rumuruti headquarters, a testament to the centre’s success in delivering quality training.

Mwangangi points out this year, 370 students have registered, with 90 students attending each session.

Nevertheless despite these achievements, Mwangangi notes that the centre is facing some challenges notably no digital hub has been opened yet, however adds that a partnership with Tribus Kenya aims to expand training facilities to include a modern digital hub.

"Both the national and county governments are also working on increasing training tuition and expanding classroom spaces to accommodate more students and prevent delays in enrollment," he adds.

The communication specialist highlights the inclusivity of the institution, emphasizing that Ajiry Centre welcomes anyone willing to learn, regardless of age.

However, he urges the government to step in and improve training facilities, particularly by expanding classrooms and providing essential resources such as cameras for practical training.

One of the most inspiring stories from the centre is that of Mr. Joram Nderitu, the eldest trainee.

Expressing his gratitude for being accommodated even in January 2025, he praises the centre for its well-organized structure and engaging participation. His story is a testament to the institution’s commitment to lifelong learning.

Ajiry Centre continues to spread its message through formal channels such as posters and letters to the public and churches in Nyahururu township coupled with dedicated leadership and support from stakeholders like Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu and other county officials.

As the centre strives to bridge the digital divide and empower more individuals with critical skills, one thing remains clear: Ajiry Centre is not just a training institution—it is a catalyst for change, shaping a new generation of skilled, confident, and tech-savvy individuals ready to take on the world.
