Elephant attack claims life in Nyahururu, sparking protests over wildlife conflict.
Transport came to a halt along the busy Nyahururu-Rumuruti Road; Monday morning following the demise of Josphat Oruko, sixty-five years old who was reportedly attacked by an elephant from Marmanet Forest Sunday night at his home in Kauka village in Nyahururu Laikipia county.
Vehicles that use the route were forced to use alternative routes as the residents vowed to shut down everything until they have a conversation with the authorities.
The angry residents went to the streets, demanding accountability from Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). Claiming that many people had been killed and properties destroyed by the elephants from the nearby Marmanet Forest and their efforts to get justice had gone in vain.
Mrs. Cecilia Kariuki a neighbor who witnessed the scene says that the elephant came from nearby Marmanet Forest into the homestead of the deceased, attacked him and when she screamed for help they rushed there only to find a lifeless body lying on the ground.
“I saw the elephant from the forest storming into his homestead, when I screamed for help and neighbors arrived only to find a lifeless body on the ground, “said Mrs. Cecilia Kariuki a neighbor to the deceased.
The area MCA, Irene Wacuka while visiting the scene called on CS Rebecca Miano to follow up on the promise that the forest will be fenced but up to now no progresses has been made.
“I urge CS Rebecca Miano to follow up through on the promise to fence the forest, but so far nothing has been made,” said Irene Wacuka.
They however managed to chase the elephant back to the forest.
